There’s been some debate whether Rosalía can be grouped under Latin music, which is definitely what is happening in the United States. In the past, she’s even said she “feels Latina”. So during a press conference at Primavera Sound 2019, I asked her about it. Listen to the show to find out what she had to say.
I also had the opportunity to sit down with reggaeton pioneer DJ Playero, who from his home in the Villa Kennedy public housing complex in San Juan in the early 90s started making mixtapes featuring local MCs such as Daddy Yankee. Playero would then sell cassette tapes of his mixes for $10 each, and it wasn’t until Playero mixtape #37 in 1992 that a record label offered to distribute the music. “We were really marginalized, for many years,” says Playero, who started out as an electronic and house music producer before incorporating dancehall and Panamanian reggae into his mixes. “We didn’t have radio or TV support, we didn’t have music videos, it was all through word of mouth in the streets.”
And now, J Balvin chants “Dios bendiga el reggaeton. Amén,” from the main stage of Primavera Sound festival.
